"Spooky Poems" October Lunchnotes 2019

On a morning~
dark and dreary,
when we woke~
still both weary,
shock and horror did ensue,
when I did remind you.

"Why?", you moaned~
"Why now? Why me?",
your terror~
quite a sight to see.
The morning was now quite in ruin,
the schoolbus was arriving soon!

~~~
Did you hear that? What's that sound?
Hang on- let me l👀k around!
Watch my back- while I sneak-
round the corner to have a peek!
👁h, the horror! ðŸ‘h, the strife!
That one even has a knife!
The mouse brigade are wide awake-
they've tied poor Katja to a stake!
~~~

Shadows sneak across the floor-
reaching for your toes.
You hear the creaking of a door-
of footsteps on tiptoes.

You shiver and you cower-
you bury your head deep.
It's struck the witching hour-
you wish you were asleep.

Is that a monster or a beast-
skulking at the door?
On your flesh and bones to feast-
with fangs and claws and more?

You tremble in the dark-
as silent as can be.
A light flicks on-
the image stark-
it's only your Mami!

~~~
Darkness falls
Surrounds this place
No stars
The moon won't show her face.
Silence looms
The birds gone mute
Even the owl
Is scared to hoot.
Shadows crawl
Like tentacles
Tree limbs loom
Like sentinels.
All are watching
All are still
Witching hour
With horror filled.
~~~

Things that sp👀k - and things that scare.
Things that crawl and creep.
Foggy nights - cobwebs in hair -
loud noises while you sleep.

All the loathsome things - and frights.
All the dreads and fears.
Here to haunt October nights -
as Halloween draws near!

~~~
It was a dark and stormy night,
the kind that chills your bones. ðŸĶī
The rain did lash, the wind whipped up,
and we we all alone.
When far t👀 close for comfort came,
a downright sp👀ky moan.
We screeched, and jumped, both panic-struck,
to hear...
your stomach groan!
~~~

In the murky, yellow spill ~ of light outside the door,
the very shadows fast retreat ~ in fear of something more!

The light blinks once, then twice, then out ~ and perfect black takes hold,
as screeches fill the midnight air ~ your very bl👀d runs cold!

You listen close, with bated breath ~ your body tensed to flee,
knowing that there's danger there ~ wondering what it might be?

Exhausted by the very fear ~ you finally close your eyes,
while right outside your windowsill ~ the death toll continues to rise!

~~~
Out of the very depths it came,
this fear of yours, you could not name.
Drenched in sweat, you fast awoke,
before the word could e'er be spoke.
With pallid skin and trembling limb,
stalwart, you trudged through dark and dim.
Your fear, a frantic pulsing beat,
as for the PSAT you took a seat!
~~~

From the depths it did emerge~
to twine about your toes~
to shiver right on up your spine~
and tickle at your nose.
Stalking 'cross the bed it comes~
while you drift and doze~
hoping to catch you unawares~
sneaky, I suppose.

The moonlight catches on a glint~
a sliver of claw or fang~
you grumble as you toss and turn~
a whimper of fear's first pang.
Your sleep-haze clears, you feel it now~
the terror that it brang~
then...‼thwump‼...so brave, you've got it now~
caught Katja where she sprang!

~~~
You woke with a start~quite light of heart.
Leapt from the bed~with a clear head.
The weekend near~and Friday here.
...but you were wrong!!
Your breath went still~in air so chill.
Your heartbeat raced~your cheer replaced.
And in the gloom~you learned your doom.
...'twas ‼Monday‼ all along!
~~~

Out of dark and dreary night~
you woke, to rise, and learn your plight.

Whilst sleeping, all the world had changed~
familiar sights now re-arranged.

Gone was the comfort and the care~
in stress and fear once more ensnared.

Weak rising sun a cruel omen~
it dawned a ‼Monday‼ once again!

~~~
In morning's gloom, and eerie drear,
you feel the presence of something near.
Short breath, fast pulse, you're on alert,
you curl up tight, with eyes avert.
It's 'fight or flight', and yet you freeze,
cold tendrils give your heart a squeeze.
L👀k out! It's coming from behind!
You're caught! It's time to Rise and Shine!
~~~

'Twas dark and you were all alone,
when you were startled by a moan.

From empty halls, you heard it clear,
and hackles raised, to feel it near.

You glanced about, in furtive stealth,
fearful for your life and health.

And finding the house still empty,
that moan? Why, you were just hungry!

~~~
Fog rolls in and darkness settles,
blocking out the light,
moonlight dims and stars wink out,
on this blackest night.
Home, you rush, up the stairs,
slam the door with haste,
breathless, frantic, finally safe,
thwarted what gave chase!
...or did you??? ðŸ…ą️ðŸ…ū️ðŸ…ū️‼
~~~

"Here there be monsters!",
so said the map,
as onward we trudged,
expecting a trap.

The landscape was littered,
with picked-over bones,
of once valiant braves,
of children, of crones.

No refuge was found,
for those passing this way,
or those who had ventured,
this monster to slay.

We shivered and shuddered,
tip-toeing through,
blinking back fear,
aghast at the view.

Then finally came,
within view of the cave,
frozen in fright,
no longer brave.

The monster was found,
 our quest now near done,
we trembled and trudged,
in the last rays of sun.

Time to blend in,
as small as can be,
to sneak up unnoticed,
set prisoners free.

We rushed into battle,
the monster we trounced,
then breathless we rose,
both glad to...
...not be a mouse!
Beware! Attack Cat!

~~~
With a groan and a moan,
you rolled out of bed,
shaking off cobwebs,
from limbs and from head.
You muttered and sulked,
a real morning grouse,
then shrieked when your toes,
encountered a mouse!
What foulness here,
had transpired last night,
to find you this morning,
in such a gross plight.
A beast? Or a monster?
A witch in tall hat?
Something quite fierce!
Ah, 'twas only the cat!
~~~

Are you frightened? Are you scared?
On alert? Defense prepared?

Do you lie awake at night?
Heart aflutter? Filed with fright?

I would, too, if I were you.
If you, too, knew what I do.

Imagine! The scariest thing that could be!
Waking up to learn we're out of coffee!

~~~
From the darkest recesses,
a stealthy figure creeps,
Across a midnight-blackened room,
to where a young man sleeps.
The moonlight from the window,
where a tattered curtain hangs,
glints off of slitted eyeballs,
and the gnashing of bared fangs!
A cat, you think, in quiet relief,
and settle back to doze,
but oh, how wrong, the danger looms,
while you in sleep repose!
Far larger than a cat it is,
and so the danger grows,
'til with a *yowl* it is felled,
by your minefield of legos!
~~~

The ghosts and goblins, spooks and creeps,
have finally gathered near,
for their freak family reunion,
that happens once each year!

They've dusted up their cobwebs,
spit-polished claws and teeth,
come flapping down from hidden caves,
crawled up from down beneath!

They moan and groan, in wicked delight,
to see the feast laid out,
of trick-or-treating children, in the dark,
scurrying about!

A fang-bite here, a claw-full there,
to gorge is impolite.
Beware! Or you'll be one of the few,
gone "missing" Halloween night!

~~~
Once more the ghosts and ghouls depart,
the shrouds of fog recede.
The haunted celebration ends,
a new month takes the lead.
The goblins and the monsters fade,
now naught but memory,
so, too, the spooky poems cease,
from rhyming I'm set free!
But, what fresh horror is this?
Marked black for all to see?
The scariest day of the year for sure,
as we fight for your new IEP!
